IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. It is an 11-character alphanumeric code assigned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to uniquely identify every bank branch that participates in electronic fund transfer systems in India. Without a correct IFSC code, no money transfer via NEFT, RTGS, or IMPS can be completed.
The structure of an IFSC code is straightforward: the first 4 characters represent the bank (for example, SBIN for State Bank of India, HDFC for HDFC Bank), the 5th character is always zero (0) and is reserved for future use, and the remaining 6 characters identify the specific branch. For example, the IFSC code SBIN0001234 belongs to SBI, branch code 001234.
MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. It is a 9-digit code printed at the bottom of cheques using magnetic ink. The MICR code is used by banks to process cheques quickly through automated clearing systems. While IFSC codes are used for online transfers, MICR codes are primarily associated with physical cheque processing through the clearing house system.
