What is a PIN Code?
PIN code stands for Postal Index Number. It is a 6-digit numeric code introduced
by India Post (Department of Posts) in 1972 to simplify the sorting and delivery of mail across
India. Every post office in India has a unique PIN code that tells postal workers exactly which
delivery zone and post office branch the mail is destined for.
India is divided into 9 postal zones, each identified by the first digit of the
PIN code:
For example, all Tamil Nadu PIN codes start with 6, and Chennai-specific codes
