Understanding India's Weather & Climate

India experiences a highly diverse climate due to its vast geographical expanse — from the snow-capped Himalayas in the north to the tropical coastline in the south. The country's weather is largely governed by the monsoon system, making it one of the most monsoon-dependent agricultural economies in the world. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), established in 1875, is the national weather forecasting agency responsible for issuing weather warnings, cyclone alerts, and seasonal forecasts.

India has four main seasons: Winter (December to February) — cool and dry in most of India, with north India experiencing cold waves and fog; Summer / Pre-monsoon (March to May) — hot and dry, with temperatures in north India often crossing 45°C and Tamil Nadu experiencing the Agni Natchathiram (fire star) heat wave period; Southwest Monsoon (June to September) — the primary rainy season that brings around 75–80% of India's annual rainfall; and Northeast Monsoon (October to December) — particularly significant for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and coastal Andhra Pradesh, where this is the primary rainy season. Chennai and southern Tamil Nadu receive the majority of their annual rain during the northeast monsoon (October–December).

Chennai's Weather – What to Expect

Chennai has a tropical wet and dry climate. The city is known for its high humidity and heat year-round. Average temperatures range from 24°C in January to 38–42°C in May and June. Chennai rarely experiences heavy rainfall during the southwest monsoon (June–September) but receives substantial rain during the northeast monsoon (October–December). Cyclones originating in the Bay of Bengal occasionally make landfall near Chennai, with IMD issuing advance cyclone warnings. The city's proximity to the Bay of Bengal keeps humidity levels consistently high (typically 60–85%).

Weather Terms Explained

Temperature is measured in degrees Celsius (°C) in India. Humidity refers to the amount of water vapour in the air — expressed as a percentage; high humidity (above 70%) makes heat feel more intense. Wind speed is measured in km/h or knots. UV Index measures ultraviolet radiation from the sun — in south India during summer, UV index regularly reaches 10–12 (extreme), so sun protection is advised. AQI (Air Quality Index) measures air pollution — values below 50 are good; above 300 is hazardous, commonly seen in Delhi during winter months.
